ARTICLE SUMMARY
Is your program looking for a new way to keep your rehabilitation patients engaged in physical activity? Consider shaking things up by implementing dance as an alternative to more traditional exercise activities! A new study published in the September issue of JCRP investigated the use of Latin dance in place of traditional aerobic exercise within a cardiac rehabilitation program at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System to determine how this form of exercise impacted patient outcomes. After studying patient outcomes for one group of patients that completed traditional aerobic exercises and another group that used salsa, merengue, and cha-cha-cha dances as exercise, both groups had similar positive changes in quality of life, functional capacity, and body composition, and patients in the dancing cohort had larger increases in their 6 minute walk distance and DASI scores than the group that completed more traditional exercises. Make sure to read the full article in the newest issue of JCRP. Check out the visual abstract for the article below, and consider breaking out your dancing shoes for your next rehabilitation class!
